FT100 is currently at 4404 and the Dow Jones is at 10593,
the FT hovering around 4500 but the US market has moved up about 10% over the
last few months. Interest rates have stated to move up in the UK with expectations
of a full 1% rise in total before next Christmas,
Alan Greenspan at the US Fed has been making noises that rates will start to rise
there also but the Presidential election next November is
probably proving to be an inhibiting influence. There have been job losses
both in the UK to India and in the US to China (2 million+)
and that is again causing economic consternation. The prognosis
is not positive and virtually all analysts see rates higher next year.
All that has been compounded by a very weak US dollar, which over the last year
has fallen by 15% against Sterling and 17% against the Euro,
ergo good for US exports but bad for importers! There now appears to be some official
support for the Dollar, so expect to see speculators on the horizon. Who would
have believed that Parmalat would have debts of about 10
billion pounds or 18 billion USD or 14 billion Euros!! Shell proved that
even the best-respected companies could sometimes drop the ball, when they announced
that about 4 billion barrels of oil that they thought was there, was not. (Oops!)
I am no harbinger of doom, far from it but in recent years we
have had Enron, WorldCom, Parmalat as the big ones, is there anyone out
there going to tell us that we have seen the last of mighty that have fallen?
As the financial authorities around the world tighten up auditory controls, it
is not outwith the bounds of possibility to see more organisations with
problems - or worse! The
main thrust since the Christmas break has been the fantastic
2002 Burgundies, with most merchants getting the wines sold at a very rapid
pace. This vintage is truly one to have in ones cellar, if you don't you
will regret it as the top wines will always be very desirable. At the non-investment
there are terrific wines still available, but only take advice from a specialist
rather than someone who wants to sell a box of wine! Some names to lookout for
are Drouhin, Bruno Clair, Drouhin Laroze, Grivot, Colin
Deleger, Michel Lafarge, Didier Darviot-Perrin and Sauzet. They all made
fabulous wine in 2002 and even at the villages' level, 200-250GBP will buy a gorgeous
wine to be enjoyed in 3-5 years and remembered for so much
longer. Buy, as much as you can afford, you will
never regret it. Latour
2002 is still at a heady price of 1350GBP, the market is
being drip-fed the wine so the price remains high, time will tell if it
is worth a premium of about 50% over Lafite. Château
Léoville Las Cases 2001 has been released and is available at 450-475GBP,
which for that quality is excellent value for the consumer; incidentally Robert
Parker gave this wine a score of 92-94. Incidentally Mr Parker gave the same score
for the 2002 to Château Léoville Poyferré,
which is available at 200GBP, surely a bargain! Lynch
Bages 2000 remains a strong seller even at 640GBP, as does the Hosanna 2000 at
up to 1000GBP. The
Château Beaucastel 2000 and 2001 are still relatively
well priced; the former was given a boost when Robert Parker gave it a
score of 97/100 at a dinner last year. These wines are truly
fabulous quality and are destined to move up in price over time. If you
want to know how good these wines are, go and buy a Côtes-du-Rhône
from a good producer and be prepared to be amazed. Take a tip and start with Patrick
Lessec or Coudoulet de Beaucastel, the latter wine will require
a little airing but you will see what I mean. Penfolds Grange 1998 continues
to sell well as do most of the top Australian wines. Sales of Italian wines have
been very good especially the Flaccianello della Pieve 2000 Tenuta Fontodi which
is a truly terrific wine for the money. We

to see for yourself how fine wine has historically been a first-class and consistent
investment, when the wine is sourced from reliable suppliers and not some of the
cowboys that have given our business problems in the past. December
