2001 Newsletter - Bordeaux 2000
 The
amazing flurry of sales and offers of the 2000 Bordeaux vintage
is at an end. Now the dust has settled, we see the top wines at
prices totally unheard of. Cheval Blanc is being traded at £3,300
per case and other first growths at £2,200,and this is for
barely fermented grape juice lying in a barrel in a cellar in France.
One cannot argue at the price, the demand outstripped supply by
a considerable margin, but ask yourselves a question. What does
that make the top wines of other vintages worth now? If Cheval Blanc
is worth that amount of money, what price Mouton Rothschild 1982,
which was at £4,000, or Montrose 1990 at £1700? These
two wines are veritable legends; Robert M. Parker bestowed the ultimate
accolade of 100/100 and they also have the considerable advantage
of years of maturity. There will be an upward revision in the market,
as it makes these and many other wines look cheap
..
Astonishing
to think, but Christmas is relatively a few weeks away. Please consider
a case or two of fine wine as a gift to be treasured by the connoisseur,
be they family, friends or colleagues. There can be few gifts that
promise so much and when the cork of the first bottle is pulled,
the occasion can be shared with appreciative enthusiasts of a like
mind.
Similarly
for the generous endowment to a child, there can be few presents
that can become more precious than a case of Fine Wine. Depending
on the age of the young person, the perfect wine can be chosen to
coincide with adulthood. Advice can then be sought as to the then
current value of the wine and disposal, if necessary.
