| The
June 2005 Newsletter: Bordeaux 2004 - All Châteaux have now
declared their prices!
The FT100 is currently at 5009 and the Dow
Jones is at 10500, and both exchanges are still in limbo.
Interest rates are now set to fall possibly on both sides of the
Atlantic and the property market has peaked.
The news from the high street is not good
with retail sales starting to fall, the first time for many years.
Some analysts have commented that people who bought houses in the
last few years on special low rate deals have now gone onto the
standard variable rate at the end of the discounted period and this
has seen a doubling on their mortgage payments.

We have seen virtually
all the wines form Bordeaux declare their prices and demand has
been strong in places like Calon Ségur
at £215, Léoville Barton at £240, Montrose at
£294, Vieux Château Certan at £450 and
disappointing in other areas particularly
Cos D'Estournel at £450. Our opinion is that Montrose
is a better wine than Cos D'Estournel and the market agrees with
Montrose outselling Cos by a significant margin. This may be one
time where Robert Parker has got it wrong.
The market is very
price sensitive and when Pavie came out at
£750 there where not too many takers, surprise, surprise
the price came down in no time to £660.
We are still not convinced that this is value for money when you
can get Calon Ségur at £215, Léoville Barton
at £240, Montrose at £294 and Vieux Château Certan
at £450.
We think that this
campaign although it got off to a slow and even muddled start will
be longer than in recent years, especially as the wines are under
constant revaluation by tasters going out to Bordeaux.
Demand has been very
good for Margaux, Lafite, Latour and of course
Le Pin for which we got an allocation this year. An
offer for these First Growths will go out today, Friday
10th June for these wines.
The sweet wines of
Bordeaux 2004 are apparently showing well at this very early stage.
I would recommend that if you do purchase then stipulate that you
want half bottles rather than normal bottles. The reasoning is quite
simple; you then have 24 opportunities to
have the wine rather than 12. If you need more wine at a
dinner party then open another half, but the overriding consideration
is that a case of half bottles is far more saleable than a case
of normal ones as restaurants love the halves that are perfect for
a group of four or even 6 diners. Note that D'Yquem
2004 is now available en primeur.
---------
The wines that have sold very well over the last months have been
the 1996's form the Medoc, particularly Margaux, Lafite and Latour.
Mouton Rothschild 1986 prices have started to move up, as have the
1982 1st Growths. Petrus from the 1970's onwards has sold very well,
particularly the 1998, which is considered by most to be superior
to the 1989 or 1990 wines and the equal of the 2000. The price difference
can be £4000, which makes the 1998 a bargain, as they are
BOTH Robert Parker 100 point wines.
Leoville Poyferre
continues to sell well as the market now recognises that they are
making superb wine and this is very much a property to follow. The
same can be said of Montrose and Latour especially in recent vintages.
Sociando Mallet just keeps on outperforming its rivals making prodigious
wine at very reasonable prices. Those who have tasted the 1986 or
1990 in recent years will know exactly what I mean!
Burgundy
especially the reds from 2002 and 2003
have proved to be the wines to buy with the Domaine Romanee Conti
2002 wines have attracted all the attention of late with prices
headed for the stratosphere. Like Petrus, there is only a very small
amount of wine available and a queue right around the corner. The
2002 white Burgundies are very good indeed especially the Chablis,
but take care with the 2003's, as they are very low in acidity and
are not typical of what one might expect. The Chablis in particular
taste more like a white Burgundy (bigger and fatter) than the typical
Chablis from recent years.
Note that the La
Chapelle 1990 from Jaboulet is short
supply and prices are starting to move up for this perfect wine,
which atypically has been approachable since release and is truly
a fantastic bottle of wine. One bottle of the 1961
La Chapelle made over £3000 at auction
recently, it is possible that the 1978
will never emerge from it's tannic shell, so the best one after
that is the 1990. Do
not say that you were not warned!!
Prices though for
most wines have remained fairly stable as the dollar is so weak
against the Pound and the Euro. The Americans have found the prices
in Europe prodigiously expensive and to a large extent have stayed
away. This situation cannot remain indefinitely and once the dollar
strengthens again we will see them as a serious factor again.
