Great Wines for
Current Drinking

Important News for Overseas Clients

We have put together 2 mixed cases of wines that are terrific value for money. By ordering a Christmas Selection case you will save time at a very busy and stressful time of year and you will be spared the considerable hassle of doing it yourself, and the wine is delivered to your door, normally within 48 hours!

We have all seen the myriad offers that you see in the papers and glossy magazines at this time of year where some wines are good but others are so very average and you can be landed with the occasional duffer. All of these bottles are excellent examples of their region of origin and I am certain that you will be delighted with them. Some of our clients send them as presents to family and friends and you can be assured that this is one Christmas gift that will go down well in every sense of the expression!"

The Celebration case

Roger Brun Grand Cru Brut Reserve Champagne NV - 2 bottles
In a tasting of wines in Decanter magazine's tasting of non-vintage Champagnes in August 2003. that included wines from top houses, growers, négociants and cooperatives, the Roger Brun NV Brut outscored many grander names including Bollinger, Ruinart, Tattinger, Veuve Clicquot and Vilmart to name just a few.
Make no mistake, this is very, very good Champagne! Quite versatile, it is excellent for life's special occasions but equally at home when taken with food. Fine and discreet flower style. Fine, delicate, creamy, good non-vintage." Four Stars***** "Quite fruity style, with the Chardonnay really lifting the flavour. This is a superior Champagne, ideal for drinking with a meal".
Food match - Lovely with smoked salmon, seafood, poultry and fruit desserts.

Jean-Claude Boisset Bourgogne Chardonnay 2001 - 2 bottles
The wines from this Burgundian negociant have undergone a wonderful transformation since the son Jean-Charles took over from his father just over a year ago. Many UK wine merchants have been astounded at the quality that now is produced by this company. This wine which is a blend of declassified Pouilly Fuisse, St Veran and Auxey Duresses has about 10% new oak and a class that belies its price. Soft, creamy, nice texture. Full and rounded with good length.
Food match - Seafood, fish, poultry and pork. Will go well with a creamy sauce.

Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc 2003 - 2 bottles
New Zealand's Kim Crawford's superb Sauvignon Blanc is testimony that where Cloudy Bay was once pre-eminent, those days are long gone. The wine displays classic Sauvignon characters of gooseberry, passionfruit, figs and a touch of herbaceousness. The palate is full bodied with rich, ripe fruit balanced with crisp acidity. A stylish wine with good fruit intensity.
Food match - All seafood, fish, poultry, pork, fusion food and cheese. Will not go well with a very creamy sauce.

Jean-Claude Boisset Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2001 - 2 bottles
40% of the growers who supply Boisset are organic as opposed to a mere 5% across the region of Burgundy. He says that they produce better fruit and of course there are no unpleasant chemicals on the grape skins. The Bourgogne Rouge is every bit as exciting as the Chardonnay. It has a light cherry/red fruit nose with a touch of floral character, crunchy black cherry fruit and supple tannins on the plate with a quite startling length.
Food match - A good quality turkey, goose or duck, beef, venison, pork and cheese.

Domaine Richaud Cairanne 2001 - 2 bottles
2001 was a great vintage in the Southern Rhone Valley and this wine is from one of the best Villages in the region. The wine is a blend of about 50% old vine Grenache and 50% Syrah and Mourvedre, and is easily comparable to a very good quality Châteauneuf-du Pape at a fraction of the price. This cuvee is delicious, and typical of what one expects of a fruit-driven, seductive, full-flavoured Cotes du Rhone Villages. This dense ruby/purple-coloured 2001 Cairanne offers aromas of kirsch, plums, and underbrush as well as a medium-bodied, ripe, fat, well textured wine.
Food match - A good quality turkey, goose or duck, venison, beef, lamb, pork and cheese.

Quinta do Infantado LBV 1998 - 1 bottle
Traditional in style (bottled early, so it throws a sediment), it is rich and peppery on the nose with great intensity and length on the finish. It is, we think, unbeatable in this category.
Food match - A top quality strong cheese and chocolate.

Mount Horrocks Clare Valley Cordon Cut Riesling 2002 - one half bottle
"One of the finest sweet wines in Australia." The wine is bright white gold with lime-edges. It is floral-scented, with candied orange and fragrant lime cordial notes. The concentrated fruit and high sugar content give a luscious mouthfeel. Dried apricots, lime and honeysuckle
flavours are fresh and lively, with a well-balanced finish.
Food match - Any traditional Christmas dessert, or just by itself for a special treat.

The Classic Case

Michel Guilleminot Champagne - 2 bottles
This cuvee is produced from 100% Pinot Noir giving it extra depth and berry fruit character. However it has great crispness and race that gives balance to the ripe fruit. This cuvee shows what great quality growers champagne is capable of. All the fruit is sourced from the Guilleminot's own vineyards in the southerly Vallée de l'Aube.

2001 Chablis, Billaud-Simon - 2 bottles
The wines from this Domaine are certainly amongst the finest produced in this famous region. Fruit is sourced from amongst the finest vineyards in the region. Bernard Billaud believes that the best Chablis is produced without the interference of oak and so this is vinified in stainless steel before bottling in April after the vintage. The wine has a wonderful note of gentle buttery fruit from lees stirring. On the palate there is terrific purity and balance all leading to a stunning mineral finish. Stunning Chablis.

2002 Sauvignon Blanc, Staete Landt, Marlborough - 2 bottles
Top flight Sauvignon from the Dutch duo of Ruud Maasdam and Dorien Vermaas. Although the vines are still young there is extraordinary concentration of ripe tropical fruit. Ten percent of the fruit is fermented in old oak French oak barrels to give an extra layer of depth and complexity to the wines. This is serious Sauvignon Blanc which must feature amongst the very best being produced in Marlborough today.

1998 Ch. Sainte-Pierre, Lalande de Pomerol - 2 bottles
This is an excellent property that forms part of the J-P Moueix stable of wines. Great depth of fruit here with typical Merlot plumminess but a percentage of Cabernets Sauvignon ad Franc gives a darker fruit character and a pleasing herbaceous edge beneath. The palate is ripe and succulent but, most importantly fresh and focused, with suave tannins and fresh acidity. A very well made wine that is just beginning to show depth and complexity and is drinking very well indeed.

2001 Bourgogne Rouge, Domaine Colin-Deleger - 2 bottles
This is an excellent example of succulent ripe Pinot fruit with a cherry and spiced red berry character. Pinot Noir is typically soft with very gentle tannins. It has crisp fresh acidity, which keeps the fruit clean and balanced in the mouth. For those of you unsure about what good Burgundian Pinot Noir should taste like then this is a terrific way to begin.

1988 Taylors Quinta do Vargellas - 1 bottle
A single Quinta port from the house of Taylor, widely accepted as one of the 'first growths' of the port region. Vargellas is a single Quinta, or farm, located in the heart of the Douro valley and which produces some of the regions finest fruit. This is now fifteen years old and beginning to show all the depth, concentration and complexity one would expect of such pedigree. This has a rich, complex nose of prune and Christmas pudding fruit with an enticing edge of spice, pepper and leather. This is an alluring glass of wine that would be a perfect match to the Christmas Stilton.

N.V. Chambers Rutherglen Muscat - one half bottle
This wine has been described by a famous American wine critic as the liquid equivalent to Viagra. These wines are aged in a similar way to sherry in a solera system and so some of the components are as much as 100 years old. The depth and concentration of rich, sweet raisin and date fruit is balanced by wonderful acidity, which keeps the wines fresh. This is without doubt the perfect match to Christmas pudding but is also delicious with vanilla ice cream or treacle tart.
